Can You Get This Shark Off My Leg ?

February 12th, 2004 (03:55 pm)

A diver with a shark clamped to his leg left the sea, drove to a surf club and asked a lifeguard: "Can you help me get it off?"

Luke Tresoglavic, 22, was snorkelling when he was bitten 300 metres from the beach north of Sydney. He swam ashore with the shark's razor-sharp teeth embedded just below his knee.

Luke said: "A couple of people tried to help me, but I could not remove it. So I got in my car and drove to the clubhouse."

Lifeguard Michael Jones flushed the 2ft wobbegong shark's gills with fresh water, forcing it to loosen its grip on Luke's leg, which had 70 needle-like punctures.

I was bitten by a stuffed shark once. I'm an educational tevchnician in my day job, and I was carrying a tray loaded with various skulls plus the shark for a lesson about teeth and feeding methods. As I was trying to get through a doorway a kid ran through the other way, I tipped the tray back to give her room, and the shark slid back and bit my hand hard enough to draw blood.

So I mentioned this on Usenet in a thread about animal bites, which I'd joined midway through - and it turned out that the root message of the thread was from someone who'd been bitten by a stuffed shark in a bizarrely similar accident a couple of weeks earlier.

You try telling that to the youth of today and they won't believe you...
