Terror Nova part thirteen (Buffyverse/NCIS)

September 20th, 2010 (11:46 am)

Part thirteen, or: It's unlucky to be McGee today.

Part 13

Timothy McGee slowly surfaced from unconsciousness.

Voices in the background were chatting away, as he fuzzily tried to get up and turn around. Unfortunately, he was tied up, and as he realised with a shock, blindfolded. Suddenly very much awake, he stopped making obvious movements, and started testing the strength of the restraints cautiously.

If he concentrated hard, he could also make out some of what they were saying in the next room as well...

“I know you hate waiting around, but this is our best shot at finding Zero. Once he got to that car, our normal methods weren’t going to cut it and time is not exactly our friend today.”

“Yeah, yeah, I know. Just hate being cooped up ever since, y’know.”

McGee flexed his hands carefully. They were tied behind his back in what felt like some sort of cables. He blinked behind his blindfold. They were computer cables of some sort... were they still in his apartment!?!

“Just be a little more patient, Faith. We need this NCSI guys to do our legwork for us...”

“Not CSI. That’s a TV show.”

“NCSI, NCIS. What’s the diff? Who cares?”

“Well, for one, I think our reluctant host would care. I just think you should be a little more respectful.”

Damn straight. Timothy McGee almost nodded in agreement before remembering he was supposed to be knocked out. He concentrated on the cables around his wrists again. If they were his spare cabling, then they weren’t intended for this purpose at all...

“Anyhow, wish we could speed up their investigation somehow. How long can it take to find one car after all?”

“Honestly, I’m impressed they’ve gotten this far already. They’ve gotten the time frame down to a couple of hours to check both before and after, but given the sheer volume of cars that used that particular junction, it’s more of a brute force approach now.”

“... how long can it take to find one car after all?”

“Never change, Faith. Just never change.”

McGee could feel the play on the cables starting to give a little. That was the thing about tying someone up with smooth coated cables after all – a lot more chance of interplay and the cables starting to glide over each other. Just a few more undisturbed minutes....

“So, how are we sure this thing of theirs is gonna help us out?”

“Well, with Zero’s sunlight allergy, he’s going to need a place to hold up for the day – and something to eat. Two birds, one stone: grab the jogger, head on back to her place. Just need to pray it’s not an apartment block or something similar.”

“ID the car, ID the location we need, right?”

“And with our new handy-dandy non-obvious backdoor into NCIS servers, we get to see what they find as they find it.”

Tim McGee almost swore under his breath. And with him stuck here, there wasn’t anyone left at NCIS headquarters with any chance of spotting that sort of thing. Other than Abby, who would be stuck in her labs for a good while yet, there simply wasn’t anyone that smart.

He paused as a thought hit him. Although, in this case, maybe absolute stupidity would be his saving... It was all on Tony now.

He stiffened as his computer dinged. Even blindfolded and a room away, he knew that sound: Search successfully complete. He’d found something.

Back at NCIS headquarters, Tony DiNozzo raised his head from the papers on his desk and stared over at McGee’s computer. “Did that just make a noise?”

~ + ~

“Got a match! Two year old Toyota Prius, silver colour, broken side-view mirror in second shot. Pulling the image files up...now.”

“Yeah, that’s Zero alright driving in picture number two. Looks like his vic’s still alive and terrified right now.”

“Makes sense. He still has to know where he’s driving to, after all. And... freeze frame to get the license plate.”

McGee started struggling against the cables in earnest. He had to get free before they found what they were looking for. They were going to be engrossed in the screens now, so he had a small chance. If only this cable would slide more....

The highly trained, deeply experienced Special Agent Tony DiNozzo and Mossad Officer Ziva David stood around McGee’s computer, regarding it in bafflement.

“It made a noise! That’s a good thing, right?”

“Was it a noise of success?”

“I don’t know! Do you take me for a geek?”

“I sometimes feel it would be a good swap, yes.”

“Ha ha.”

“I love this guy. See? One click app to get straight into the DMV servers instantly. And inputting the plate now...”

Heh. He’d put a lot of effort into that app. Nice to see someone appreciating it even if he was going to have to arrest them in one short minute.

~ + ~

“I do not wish to add any more pressure on you, but Gibbs will be back at any moment, Tony.”

“Call McGee?”

“Call McGee.”

~ + ~

“Got it! Owner’s one Andrea Masterson, 2376 North Bishop Drive. Looks like the swanky end of town, so no or little witness around.”

“We’re in business.”

McGee’s cell rang. In his pant pockets.

“What was that?”

New theory: McGee is this world's Dawn. And apparently it's Tuesday. ;)

Continuing to love this like a fat kid loves cake.

PS: I think you meant 'hole up', not 'hold up' in the bit about the sunlight allergies.

Also? The description + your icon = fleeting moment of horror, at least until I figured even you wouldn't be that evil.

My theory of NCIS writing is that McGee is the team's designated damsel-in-distress after Ziva turned the position down with one look and a muttered threat involving lower intestines.
