Been busy over the last week or so watching the ever-amusing train wreck that is the result of Marvel Comics' massive Spiderman retcon One More Day. Wherein the webslinger makes a deal with the devil to get rid of his marriage, save his Aunt May's life and make everyone in the world forget his secret identity. To say this has not gone down well with the fans is a slight understatement.
The Main trouble being that Marvel are trying to have their cake and eat it. 'Oh, those stories all still happened - it's just that no-one remembers that.' Spiderman and MJ no longer remember ever being married, Harry Osbourne is back from the dead (and apparently has been married three times already) and Peter's back living at his Aunt May's house, dead broke and looking for a job.
If Marvel say that no-one knows who Spiderman is and that these stories happened, then a good number of them rely on people knowing who Spiderman is. Why is Gwen Stacy dead if Norman never knew who Spiderman was? Did the Venom symbiote ever merge with Peter? How the hell did Black Cat date Spidey for so long and never find out who he was? What about the frigging unmasking on national television back in Civil War 2?
Somebody never thought this through properly. But according to Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada : "It's Magic. We don't have to explain it." No wonder JMS wanted his name taken off this...
