Sentimental yet sardonic [userpic]

March 14th, 2006 (11:52 am)

wsasianboy challenged me as to why exactly he should watch Doctor Who. As series one starts airing in the States on Friday (on Sci-Fi - set your Tivo's now!), I thought I'd turn to the flist. How exactly should I appeal to him?

Should I mention the fun scripts? The chemistry between The Doctor and Rose? The mystery of Bad Wolf? The brilliant Captain Jack? Or should I just go for the shallow approach and mention the hotness of Rose?

Does he have interest in the original Who? That would be a doorway in. The new stuff is VERY much in the spirit of the old.

And Rose ain't that hot, and even borders on the annoying in the few eps I've seen. ;)

Me, I won't be watching on Scifi, I'm gonna just go straight to the DVDs, coming out in the US on July 2nd.

Well, I'm not exactly in the Rose-is-so-hot camp, but I did thoroughly enjoy every episode that I saw (I missed a few - bad me!) for the humour, the interaction between the characters and so forth. It's a good sci-fi show, and one worth watching.

I haven't seen it yet, so I cannot help you.

I am going to watch it just because you've rec'd it in the past, and I haven't watched Doctor Who in years.

Tardis Love Shack

It's fun, it's intriguing, it has the ability to go anywhere and anywhen, it's not restricted to just one genre. Throw in a man with a mysterious past, the single best time machine ever, a pissed off boyfriend and mother, robotic killing machines, a creepy little boy, Charles Dickins, fantastic acting and scripts, a season stealth arc and you have the British TV success story of last year.

Ace Rimmer Jack

The kind of good friend who tells you before it gets shown. It's the first two episodes as well.

Tell Ilex that I said Mad Aunt Lar should be allowed to watch it. :P

Ace Rimmer Jack

Sorry about taking so long, but I finally managed to track this link down - it's Sc-Fi's repeat schedule for the first episodes.

No Jack for the first half of the season, but you will love them.

I'm probably in a minority in that I don't actually think Rose is all that hot. Sure she's cute in a blonde kind of way but I've probably been spoiled by watching some of the classics not that long ago (particularly "Talons").

But I'd definitely recommend anyone with even a vague interest in science fiction TV give "Rose" a try. It's only and hour and you never know, they might just like it...
