For the Americans on LJ.....

current mood: needing coffee

....You might well be screwed.

Annoying someone via the Internet is now a federal crime.

It's no joke. Last Thursday, President Bush signed into law a prohibition on posting annoying Web messages or sending annoying e-mail messages without disclosing your true identity.

In other words, it's OK to flame someone on a mailing list or in a blog as long as you do it under your real name.

So we Brits or Norwegians or Australians can quite happily sit around and mock you with our secret identities. This could be interesting...

WTF

missmurchison pointed this out a few days ago - resulting in a wonderful array of comments - http://www.livejournal.com/users/missmurchison/280281.html

I also noticed that one of my previously very pro-Bush LJ friends is decrying this, and says she is no longer a supporter of the current regime, it seems to have been the last straw for her!

I thought about that, too. Damn it, I need more supersekrit identities for the mocking.

This law is definitely a boon to those of us with really generic names! I mean, I am Jim from Florida -- ha ha ha now you know who I am and I mock you!

Yeah, but the ACLU has already said they're going to go after the law, so I don't expect it to be around that long.

And that was from me... why I am logged out on my home computer I don't know. Silly computer.

I just figured that you were making a point by going anonymous.

Badass Houdini Hamster

I believe this is the part where I learn to hack into other systems so that when I log in, people trying to find where I live will find some poor unfortunate 47-year-old man in Norway.

...

mynuet's brand of snark is infectious, I tell you. Squee.
