Book meme!

Book Meme (taken from bastardsnow)

1. Choose five of your all time favorite books.
2. Take the first sentence of the first chapter and make a list in your journal.
3. Don't reveal the author or the title of the book.
4. Now everyone try and guess.

1) The big groundcar jerked to a stop centimetres from the vehicle ahead of it, and Armsman Pym, driving, swore under his breath. A Civil Campaign – Lois McMaster Bujold

2) I was following Derry Welfram at a prudent fifty paces when he stumbled, fell face down on the wet tarmac and lay still. The Edge – Dick Francis

3) It was starting to end, after what seemed most of eternity to me.

4) The trouble started the day Howard came home from school to find the Goon sitting in the kitchen. Archer’s Goon – Diana Wynne Jones

5) "So, Vaijon. Are you ready?" The War God's Own - David Weber

Some of those are easier than others. *grins*

But it's interesting to look at those lines in isolation. I always try when writing fic to make the first line memorable and to draw the reader further into the story - to find out what happens next. The majority here introduce the world of the story nicely and wet your appetite so well that I, who's read each of these books at least three times each, want to re-read them again. That's good authorship.

Edited to add correct guesses.

Fundamentalist Christian film reviews

I'm sure we’ve all been waiting for the one review of Sin City (see below from Mike) that matters. The one from CAPAlert, the fundamentalist Christian website that reviews most released movies to see if they’re scripturally acceptable. Mary Poppins scored 100. CAPAlert reviewed the film ET, with the phrase "I am not going to get into a debate about the evilness of levitation", giving the film an amber light warning and a score of 83. The Incredibles? Red light and 68. Dogma with its atheist-preaching angels, Catholic buffoonery, abortion-clinic-working relations to Jesus? 6.

Sin City scored 0.
