Dollhouse 1x01 - Ghost

Finally caught the pilot episode, and overall : not bad. I suspect it'll be a slow grower if anything, but the potential is there. It's just that it doesn't feel like a Joss Whedon program so far.

Ironically, my main area of concern is whether the single episode plots/ideas they come up with can successfully blend into ongoing plotlines. I guess I'm almost hoping for a regular number of set personalities to keep cropping back up.

Oh, and the computer guy/wiping geek : too creepy for comic relief, too goofy looking for bad guy status. (Too much Andrew, too little Xander?) And that I suspect is by design. No all-good guys, no all-bad guys.

I literally just finished watching as well and you took the words out of my mouth. It doesn't feel like a Joss show. It's too network tv-ish, good tv just not whedon tv. the ex-cop/handler seems interesting though.

It's the dialogue - or lack of typical Joss quotable lines. That's what really stands out for me.

Honestly, I think I might have enjoyed this more if I hadn't known it was a Joss show. It's not bad, it's just not terribly good yet.

Very good point, but it is a pilot that's been reworked on several times. Going off on a tangent, have you seen the most recent BSG and sarah connor episodes?

I basically agree with everything you say here, but I would also add that I do worry about about Eliza's range as an actress. I love her to death, but I think this show is really going to be a stretch for her, and that Ms. Penn was not a great way to start out. She did the 'doll' well, and she did the first role (the girl in the achingly short white dress) well also, but Ms. Penn was a reach and I honestly am not quite sure she made it.

It wasn't great, but it wasn't horrible, and it was good enough that I'll keep to my "I'll give it at least a few weeks" statement.

There were things that didn't quite make sense, but it engaged my attention enough that I'll watch the next one.

I liked the handler guy, I think because he was the only one who really got a chance to develop a character. It was more than a bit choppy. And I agree, it's going to be really difficult to develop a back story like this. I think the FBI dude is supposed to be our first main arc, but we'll see.

I just hope that the series gets a chance to breathe. It could develop into something really interesting... or it could turn into Whedon's run on Runaways. We'll see.

*nods* Yeah, had it been anything but Joss, I'm not sure I would have felt to 'blah' about it. Here's hoping 2 and 3 are better. I'm giving it a solid month before I decide. Sadly, I'm rather worried that this wasn't a strong enough start to get the ratings Fox is going to want.
