Note to self...

When trying to get your writing mojo back, DO NOT read good fanfic - you will only depress yourself further. Still, got one hundred words written last night, which is the best for a good month or so.

(PS - I strongly recommend
Jedi Harris - Xander centric, where he swore a Star Wars outfit on Halloween, and
Far Beyond Normal - Buffy centric SG-1 crossover, where the First actually killed her in Chosen and took her body from then on.
Very, very good stuff.)

I spent yesterday afternoon/evening reading Jedi Harris and while it was quite good, I don't rate it as highly as, say, Sleeper.

My main issue with it is that Jedi Harris ends up feeling like an extended version of the Jonathan episode from season 6. The one where Jonathan casts a spell to make himself a superstar, has his own calendar and other merchandise, and he has the answer as to how to beat Adam.

In Jedi Harris, Xander quite quickly ends up becoming more of a superhero than Buffy. He runs into battle ahead of Buffy at least once in the narrative. Most of the psychological stuff is eliminated from the Scoobies' interrelationships because Xander feels the Force and nips it all in the bud with a well placed word or two. His home life improves beyond all recognition, he stops quipping and generally stops being recognisable as Xander from the show. Yes, I know he's had something massive happen to him in the story, but I don't think that it would impact on his parents and uncle as well! Not unless Xander acutally was the source of his parents' problems (and I don't think he was...)

All in all, it felt a bit meat-less (in sandwich terms!). I can see that the author is working hard to provide some baddies that actually pose a threat, but it's not come through in what I've read so far.

Would you like a similar dissection fo Sleeper or will you take my opinion for it that you shouldn't be beating yourself up over that one?
