Interesting...

December 16th, 2005 (11:28 am)

Looks like Serenity is currently only $1 million short of recouping its production cost, based solely on box office takings around the world. Add in all the dvd sales starting next week, and it looks like it's solidly in the black. Makes a sequel much more likely I'd say.

LJ news : Paid account holders filespace goes up from 100Mb to 1Gb. Meanwhile, permanent account holders get a massive 10Gb. *blinks* See right here for details. What the heck do they expect me to use that much on?

But more fun for everyone on free accounts : user pics doubled to 6.

You have just performed a valuable public service. [Well, you are in the field of transferring information - yes, even in itty bitty envelopes!]

You're the first person to have mentioned it! Yaay, you.

So, as a still unpaid account (I know, I know, I will pay one of these days), I can now add the 3 icons that were made especially for MOI.

Thank you.
Hope you are taking care of yourself as all those last-minute mailers are flooding the P.O.

Holidayish hugs,
H.

Burn the World

I think you're being a little bit optimistic there, on Serenity. It's taken three months to not even make back the cost of producing the film? That's not really encouragement to go make a sequel, at least not with a big budget, and for the theatres. And you have to take in the worldwide figures to even get it ALMOST making its money back?

"Gosh, we've not made ANY money on this yet! Lets make another one!" No, that's not how Hollywood thinks. ;)

Sadly...

Three months for this movie to almost limp across the finish line in the "just enough money to recoup the cost of making it" marathon. I'll repeat: the cost of making it. That's before Universal makes one red cent of profit. Throw in the costs of advertising and promotion before that happens. And the figure that has been tossed around for all this time about how much it has to make for sequels to be considered has been two and a half times the production budget.

There's a brief article in the newest Entertainment Weekly titled Adios, 'Firefly'......Hello, Spike? Joss Whedon's next move., which notes "Serenity's status as a franchise nonstarter, despite Universal's best marketing efforts".

"'In the end, it was what it was: a tough sell,' says Whedon, adding that it appears the Firefly saga has reached its conclusion."

With all due respect to booster, I think hoping for sequels is premature at best.

Dalek - D'oh [__kali__]

Ah... see, I was thinking more of direct to video/dvd/tv movies myself, not the big screen blockbuster type movies. But thanks for the two and a half times information - that makes a lot of sense alas.
